The Science Behind MLB Hitting: What Players Really Mean by “Batting Feel”
Baseball players talk about “feel” all the time.
A hitter says he is “seeing the ball well.”
Another says his “timing feels right.”
Someone else explains that he is “staying on pitches longer” or that his swing finally feels “easy.”
Broadcasters often describe the same thing in simpler terms: a player has found his swing, his timing is coming back, or he is starting to look comfortable at the plate.
These phrases are familiar, but they raise a more difficult question.
What are MLB hitters actually feeling when they say they are locked in at the plate?
There is no official Statcast metric called “batting feel.” Sports science does not treat it as one isolated skill either. It is not simply batting average, bat speed, vision, or timing.
Instead, what players describe as “feel” appears to involve several systems working together:
- recognizing useful information from the pitcher and the ball,
- predicting pitch speed and location,
- deciding whether to swing,
- coordinating the body with the pitch,
- and adjusting the bat to the actual path of the baseball.
When all of those processes work smoothly, the hitter may not consciously think about any of them.
He simply says:
“I’m seeing it well.”
Or:
“My timing feels good.”
The interesting part is that modern research in visual perception and motor control gives us a better idea of what may be happening underneath those simple statements.

1. An MLB Hitter Has About 0.4 Seconds — and He Cannot Wait for Complete Information
A 150 km/h fastball reaches home plate in roughly 0.4 seconds, depending on release point and velocity.
Within that window, the hitter has to do much more than see the ball and swing.
He may need to:
- pick up information from the pitcher’s delivery and release,
- identify the ball’s early speed and trajectory,
- estimate whether it is a fastball or breaking pitch,
- judge whether it will enter the strike zone,
- decide whether to swing,
- organize the body and begin accelerating the bat,
- and adjust the bat path to the actual pitch location.
These processes overlap.
The hitter does not finish identifying the pitch, then make a decision, then begin moving. There is not enough time for that.
Instead, skilled hitters work with incomplete information.
They use early visual cues to create a prediction, begin preparing a movement, and then update that prediction as the ball continues to travel.
That distinction is important because it changes the way we think about phrases such as “seeing the ball well.”
A hitter who is seeing the ball well may not literally be seeing a sharper image.
He may be extracting useful information earlier.
That creates more time for everything that follows.
Why hitters sometimes say the ball looks slower
When players are hitting well, they sometimes say the ball looks slower or larger.
That does not mean their perception of physical time has necessarily changed.
A more plausible explanation is that the hitter is processing the pitch more efficiently.
If the hitter has already used the delivery, release, and early trajectory to form a reasonable expectation, the later part of the pitch is not being processed from scratch.
Instead, the hitter is asking:
“Does this pitch still match what I expected?”
“Is it staying in the zone?”
“Do I need to continue the swing or adjust?”
That difference matters.
Two hitters may have the same 0.4 seconds available, but the hitter who has formed a useful prediction earlier effectively has more time available for decision-making and movement.
That is probably closer to what players mean when they say the ball suddenly looks easier to hit.

2. “Seeing the Ball Well” Is Not Just About the Eyes
Mike Trout’s recent experience is a useful example.
During the 2025 season, Trout hit .227 with a .356 on-base percentage and a .412 slugging percentage. His strikeout rate also climbed to 32.1%, well above his career norm.
Later in the season, Trout described one of the problems he believed was affecting him:
he was not seeing the baseball properly.
He was not saying that his eyesight had suddenly deteriorated.
The issue was tied to his mechanics.
Trout explained that his body was falling backward during the swing, causing his head to move and making it harder to keep both eyes oriented toward the pitch.
In his view, that made pitch recognition more difficult and contributed to more swings at poor pitches and more strikeouts.
That is a useful reminder that visual perception does not operate independently from the body.
If the head moves excessively, the visual system is also moving.
The baseball is following the same physical trajectory, but the hitter is processing that trajectory from a less stable platform.
That can affect several things at once:
- pitch recognition,
- strike-zone judgment,
- timing,
- and ultimately contact quality.
In early 2026, Trout discussed adjustments aimed at stabilizing his head and simplifying parts of his swing.
The early statistical results moved in the same direction as his subjective description: fewer strikeouts, fewer swings and misses, and improved plate discipline.
That does not prove that head stability alone caused the improvement. Baseball performance is influenced by many variables, and early-season samples are small.
But the example is still meaningful because the player’s subjective feeling, the mechanical adjustment, and several process metrics all pointed in the same direction.
Joey Gallo described a similar problem
Joey Gallo discussed something very similar in a 2019 interview with FanGraphs.
He explained that his lower-body movement had previously been too large, causing his head to move during the swing.
He could still see the baseball, but once his head started moving, he felt as though the ball itself was moving more than it actually was.
After reducing lower-body movement and stabilizing his head after foot plant, he felt he could see the ball longer.
Again, the issue was not eyesight.
It was the interaction between mechanics and visual perception.
This is important because when a hitter says:
“I’m not seeing the ball well,”
the problem may come from several different sources.
It could involve late pitch recognition.
It could come from rushed timing.
It could be excessive head movement.
It could be an unstable lower half.
Different mechanical problems can create a similar subjective experience.
Gallo also described himself as a “feel guy.”
That did not mean he rejected data.
His point was that he had an internal sense of what a good swing felt like, and when that feeling returned, the external performance data often improved as well.
This is one of the better ways to understand batting feel.
A hitter has accumulated thousands of repetitions.
He knows what a stable, well-timed swing feels like from inside his own body.
That internal feedback may be imperfect, but it is still meaningful.
3. Timing Is More Than Swinging Early or Late
Another phrase MLB hitters use constantly is:
“My timing is off.”
That can sound simple, but timing in hitting is not just about whether the bat arrives early or late at the ball.
The swing begins well before the bat enters the hitting zone.
As the pitcher begins his delivery, the hitter is already organizing his body.
He loads.
He shifts pressure.
The front foot moves and lands.
The pelvis and torso begin rotating.
The bat then accelerates.
All of that must be coordinated with the arrival of the pitch.
If the hitter gets ready too late, high velocity becomes difficult to handle.
If he prepares too early in an effort to avoid being late, he may commit his body before a breaking pitch reveals its final trajectory.
So “timing” is better understood as the temporal organization of the entire movement from preparation to contact.
A 2025 VR study of professional Japanese hitters helps separate the process
A 2025 study published in Frontiers in Psychology examined 23 professional Japanese baseball players in a virtual-reality hitting environment.
The researchers wanted to know whether several important hitting functions were decided at the same point in the pitch.
They separated three processes:
- adjusting when to swing according to pitch speed,
- deciding whether to swing at a strike or ball,
- and adjusting where the bat should go based on the pitch location.
The experiment included normal pitches and pitches that disappeared at different points during flight.
That allowed the researchers to ask which parts of the pitch were necessary for each task.
The results were important.
Hitting timing remained relatively stable even when later visual information was removed.
Swing/no-swing decision-making was affected more.
Bat-path adjustment to the actual pitch location was affected the most.
In other words, a hitter does not solve the entire at-bat problem at one moment.
Different parts of the swing rely on information from different points in the pitch.
A hitter may already have a good sense of when to swing, while still needing later information to determine whether to continue committing and where to direct the barrel.
That makes a common player comment much easier to understand:
“My timing feels fine, but I’m not squaring the ball up.”
Those two statements can both be true.
Temporal control and spatial control are not exactly the same problem.

Paul Goldschmidt’s Idea of Being “On Time”
Paul Goldschmidt has explained hitting in a way that fits this research well.
In an interview with FanGraphs, Goldschmidt discussed how he evaluates his swing when things are not going well.
He looks at whether he is swinging at the right pitches, whether the swing itself is functioning properly, whether the problem is timing, and whether the pitcher is simply executing well.
One of the basic things he checks is whether he is getting into a good hitting position on time.
That phrase matters.
Being “on time” does not simply mean that the bat meets the ball at the correct millisecond.
It means the hitter reaches a stable, prepared position early enough to process the pitch without rushing.
A hitter who gets there late may have to speed up his decision.
A hitter who gets there too early may commit his body before the pitch gives him enough information.
In practical terms, being on time may mean:
- the hitter begins preparing in rhythm with the pitcher,
- the front side and pressure shift organize at the right moment,
- the body is not rushing while the pitch is being evaluated,
- the hitter has time to decide whether the pitch should be attacked,
- and the swing can unfold from a stable position.
That is why vision, timing, and swing mechanics are difficult to separate.
A hitter who is physically on time may be able to see the pitch longer.
A hitter who sees the pitch earlier may also be able to organize his body more effectively.
These processes constantly influence one another.
4. Good Hitters Predict Early, but They Also Keep Adjusting
One common misconception about hitting is that once the swing starts, everything is already decided.
There is certainly a point after which the hitter cannot make major changes.
But the final bat path is not necessarily fixed the moment the hitter begins moving.
The 2025 VR study provides evidence for this.
When later visual information was removed, the hitters were still able to preserve much of their swing timing.
But their ability to match the bat path to the actual pitch location became worse.
That suggests hitters continue using visual information during the swing.
The hitter predicts early, starts the movement, then continues using the actual pitch to reduce the remaining error.
A 2026 study separated prediction from ongoing correction
A 2026 study in Frontiers in Psychology examined this issue from another angle.
The researchers recruited 15 Korean collegiate baseball players who had maintained batting averages of at least .280 over the previous two KUSF seasons.
The task was not a real baseball swing.
Players watched a fast-moving object on a screen and attempted to intercept it with a stylus at the correct time and location.
The researchers selectively removed visual information from either the early or late part of the object’s movement.
They then measured:
- eye movement,
- hand movement,
- timing error,
- and spatial error.
The results showed that timing accuracy and spatial accuracy did not respond in exactly the same way.
When visual information was limited, players were able to compensate for timing to a considerable degree.
But spatial accuracy declined when early information was unavailable, and performance deteriorated the most when both early and late information were restricted.
The researchers interpreted the results using two control strategies.
- Predictive control: using early information to estimate where and when the object will arrive.
- Prospective control: continuing to use incoming information during the movement to make corrections.
The practical implication is straightforward.
A good hitter is not someone who predicts the pitch perfectly before it arrives.
He is someone who can make a useful early prediction and then keep reducing error as more information becomes available.
That is a much more realistic description of elite hitting.
It also helps explain why hitters sometimes seem to “adjust” to pitches that are not exactly where they expected them to be.
What does “keep your eye on the ball” really mean?
This brings us to one of baseball’s oldest coaching cues.
“Watch the ball all the way in.”
The phrase is useful, but the actual eye movements involved in hitting are more complicated than it suggests.
A 2021 review in Optometry and Vision Science summarized research on eye movements, head movements, and gaze behavior in baseball hitting.
Hitters often track the pitch early.
Later in flight, however, different gaze strategies have been observed.
Some hitters continue tracking the ball.
Others use anticipatory saccades, moving their gaze toward a location where they expect the ball to arrive.
Research has not established one strategy as universally best.
But the later visual information still appears to matter for controlling the bat path.
So “watch the ball all the way in” is probably more useful when interpreted as:
Do not give up useful pitch information too early.
For younger hitters, that can lead to better coaching questions.
Is the head turning away too soon?
Is the front side opening before the hitter has processed enough of the pitch?
Is the hitter clearly picking up release and early trajectory?
Those are more specific than simply repeating “watch the ball.”

Feel vs. Real: Why a Hitter’s Internal Sense Is Not Always Accurate
There is another complication.
What a hitter feels he is doing and what his body is actually doing can be different.
Coaches often call this “feel vs. real.”
Nick Gonzales discussed this idea while explaining adjustments during the 2026 season.
He said he had become better at seeing the ball longer and laying off pitches near the edges of the strike zone.
At the same time, he talked about the gap between what he felt he was doing and what appeared on video.
That gap matters.
A hitter may feel that his hands are lower, even when the actual visual change is small.
He may feel that he is waiting longer, even though the timing difference is only a few milliseconds.
That does not make the feel useless.
The player still needs a movement cue that makes sense internally.
But modern hitting development does not stop there.
It checks that feeling against video, bat tracking, and performance data.
That is where the language of “feel” and the language of analytics start to meet.
5. Can We Measure “Batting Feel” with Statcast?
There is still no direct metric for batting feel.
But modern tracking systems allow us to examine the processes that often accompany a hitter who says he feels good.
Some useful metrics include:
- Chase Rate — how often the hitter swings at pitches outside the strike zone
- Whiff Rate — how often the hitter misses when he swings
- Bat Speed — how fast the bat is moving
- Swing Length — how far the bat travels before contact
- Attack Angle — the bat’s vertical direction at contact
- Squared-Up Rate — how efficiently the hitter converts available bat and pitch speed into exit velocity
- Blast — a swing combining high bat speed with highly efficient contact
These metrics do not measure “feel.”
But they can tell us whether the hitter’s subjective description is showing up in the underlying process.
For example, if a hitter says:
“I’m seeing the ball really well,”
we might look for:
- fewer chases,
- fewer swings and misses,
- better decisions around the edge of the strike zone.
If he says:
“I’m getting the barrel to everything,”
we might look for:
- higher Squared-Up Rate,
- stronger exit velocity,
- more consistent hard contact.
This distinction matters because good results and good hitting are not always the same thing.
A 3-for-4 game does not automatically mean the hitter had better feel
Imagine two hitters.
One goes 3-for-4.
The other goes 0-for-4.
The obvious conclusion is that the first hitter had the better day.
But what if the three hits were weakly struck balls that found open grass, while the 0-for-4 hitter produced four hard line drives directly at defenders?
The evaluation changes.
Baseball outcomes are influenced by more than the quality of the swing.
Defensive positioning, launch direction, ballpark conditions, and simple variance all matter.
That makes short-term batting average a noisy measure of current hitting quality.
If the goal is to identify whether a hitter is actually moving into a better state, process indicators may be more useful:
- Is he chasing less?
- Is he missing fewer pitches?
- Is he consistently on time against velocity?
- Is he staying back better on breaking balls?
- Is he squaring the ball up more often?
- Is hard contact becoming more consistent?
These are not perfect substitutes for “feel.”
But they allow us to compare the player’s internal perception with observable changes in swing decisions and contact quality.

So What Do MLB Players Really Mean by “Batting Feel”?
When we put the research and player experiences together, “batting feel” starts to look less mysterious.
Mike Trout and Joey Gallo showed how body and head movement can influence visual perception.
Paul Goldschmidt’s emphasis on being “on time” shows how preparation affects both decision-making and swing execution.
The 2025 professional-baseball VR study showed that timing, swing decisions, and bat-path adjustment do not all depend on visual information from the same moment.
The 2026 interception study suggested that early prediction and ongoing correction may contribute differently to timing and spatial accuracy.
Nick Gonzales’ discussion of “feel vs. real” reminds us that the hitter’s internal sense matters, but it does not always perfectly reflect what the body is actually doing.
Taken together, batting feel appears to involve several interacting systems:
- Visual perception — picking up useful information from the pitcher and the ball
- Prediction — estimating what the pitch will do before complete information is available
- Decision-making — determining whether the pitch should be attacked
- Timing — coordinating the hitter’s preparation with the pitch
- Motor control — directing the bat to the actual pitch location
- Body stability — keeping the movement organized enough for the other systems to work consistently
Sports science does not formally define “batting feel” this way.
But based on current research and player experience, a reasonable working definition would be:
Batting feel is the hitter’s subjective sense that perception, prediction, swing decision-making, timing, and bat control are working together in a stable and efficient way.
One final distinction is important.
Good batting feel and good batting results are not the same thing.
A hitter can be seeing the ball well, making good swing decisions, and producing hard contact—yet still hit the ball directly at defenders.
Another hitter can collect two weak singles on a day when his underlying process was poor.
That is why batting feel is better evaluated by combining the hitter’s own description with process metrics such as Chase Rate, Whiff Rate, Squared-Up Rate, bat speed, and exit velocity.
When MLB hitters say:
“I’m seeing it well.”
“My timing feels right.”
“My swing feels easy.”
they may be describing much more than confidence.
They may be describing the moment when vision, prediction, decision-making, and movement are finally working together without the hitter having to consciously manage every part of the swing.
That is probably much closer to what players really mean when they say they have found their “feel” at the plate.
